"If my girl ever did that to me, I would break her jaw so she couldn't tell a judge anything."
It was those words from his best friend's mouth that sent a creepy feeling down Trent’s spine and it was only because he believed his friend would actually do something like that and Trent could actually agree. He had harbored that type of anger now for his ex-wife. The two had married young (call it a shot-gun wedding) but when they split up he thought they were still on good enough terms to not cause trouble in one another’s life. Well, that was until two years ago when she met a new man and at first it took some time for Trent to get over the idea of another guy raising his daughter, another guy being in her life more than he was. It took even more time for Trent's stomach to settle at the idea of this guy moving in and Fiona was to have a step-brother. Fiona was Trent's world. She was his best friend, the light behind his eyes and he found himself jealous. He knew deep down that he was everything to his daughter but someone stepping into his territory.
He never thought what he was now slammed in the middle was even a possibility for his ex-wife to dream of. She was filing for custody. Something neither of them did. A small argument fueled this nightmare for Trent. He couldn't take Fiona on a Friday night as he was leaving town for the weekend on a last minute flight to meet up with a business partner in New Orleans and it ticked his ex-wife off something fierce. 'You barely see her so why should I bother allowing you to have her whenever you feel like.' 'You only want to be in her life when it is convenient for you.' But this was something Trent could not help. He owned his own business for Christ’s sakes. He was a busy man. Fiona understood and never seemed to hold any of it against her father. That's when Fiona's mother went to court and the nightmare began. She wanted full custody and for Trent to never see his daughter. She wanted child support for the years he didn't have to pay and then Trent found out her new husband had lost his job. Was that really the reason for all of this?
"I'm not going to pay for that fucking no-good-jobless-spineless-lazy bastard to sit on his ass and scratch his balls." Trent yelled as he passed the joint to his friend who was just nodding his head listening. He could feel is hot blood pumping through his veins then he realized his fists were balled up tight enough to cause his veins to throb. Relaxing again he looked at his friend through glazed eyes. “The sad thing is,” Cole began and Trent could feel himself tense up again because he knew a sentence starting out like that meant there was a hard truth behind it. “The sad thing is that she will probably win this because you’ll get a bitch female judge whose husband did her dirty or something. You need to get yourself a decent lawyer.” Cole finished and passed it back to Trent then watched as he too took a hit and held it in. “I know,” he muttered. This was going to be hell on earth for Trent and what made it worse was Fiona had just sent him a text telling him about her day and how she missed her dad. It pulled at his heart strings thinking about leaving her.
Letting his breath out slowly he watched the smoke dance in the air as he rested his head on the cushion of the couch. He could feel the emotions heat his cheeks and the tears threaten to spill from behind his eyes but he swallowed it down as Felicia had entered the theater room where he and Cole were sharing a joint. “I have to get going. I need to find a lawyer like you said.” Trent said as he could tell by the look on Felicia’s face that she was not happy about Cole smoking up in the house while Ava was asleep. As Trent headed out of his friend’s house he sent his ex-wife a quick text pleading for her not to do this to him. Asking her to just keep things how they are because he will do better and take Fiona every time she needs him too. He begged for her to not put their daughter in the middle of a war but all he got back in return was a ‘I need to do what I have too. It’s in the best interest for Fiona.’
